of your despatch No.190 of 15th, June with reference to the grant of a lease to Messrs. Butterfield & Swire.

2. The reason why the rent of the extension granted to Messrs. Butterfield & Swire is lower than that of the area referred to in Major-General Gascoigne's despatch will be found in copies of minutes on a very long correspond-

ence.

When application was made by Messrs. Butterfield

* Swire the Director of Public Works suggested that the lot should be put up at 10 cents per square foot and $200 per acre. To this I demurred as I considered the price too low. It then appeared that acting under a misapprehension the Director of Public Works had written a private letter to the Solicitor of the Company saying that he was authorised by me to sell the land at the price suggested, and the representative of the Com-
